I definitely have too many hobbies but running never drops off the list. Sometime in 2010 I discovered how much fun muddy trails can be (Hell Runner: frozen puddles and chest deep water in November). After a few years of toodling around solo on Scottish trails, I joined Lordshill early 2016 (attempt to cope with tarmac and dark winter nights) and never looked back. I love how club running can be such a supportive team sport (everyone counts!), and what ridiculous activities appear to be the norm now (Endure 24 anyone?). Being a scientist, I also love all the geekiness that goes into training.
I’ve been on the Committee for a few years as membership secretary, and then vice-captain and now chair. I am also super passionate about gender equality in sports – and there is still so much than needs to be done. When my niece, age 5, told me that boys are faster than girls, it crushed my heart. I hope that with the women’s development squad (aka ‘Panthers’), we can help to build confidence in our faster female runners, who typically do not appreciate what good runners they are. And if you have other ideas how to help women build confidence, let me know!
When I am not running (or reading running training plans…), I am probably close to the water, either mentally at my desk, or physically attached to my kite.
