Firenze ( Florence) Marathon

26th November 2006

What a lovely city to run a Marathon through. Starting on the Piazzale Michelangiolo with its tremendous views across the river to the Piazza Duomo the course twists and turns through quite a few of the popular streets and squares of this ancient metropolis before finishing in the Piazza S. Croce in front of the cathedral. Very well organised with ample drinks, every 5k, and sponge stalions mid way between the drinks. Uke most of the continental marathons the drinks stations were well stocked with three types of drink and plenty of cut bananas, cake and other eaterIes.

Travel and accommodation was organised by the reputable travel firm of Goodchild & Goodchild who managed to acquire exceptional rates for bed and breakfast along with a very good flight from Bournemouth to Pisa and back. The men’s race was won by James Kutto, 2.08.41, a clear four minutes in front of the second man while some way behind again was the leading women, Vincenza Sicari in 2.34.52. Last year the weekend of the race started with snow and rain although dry on race day. This year runners were bathed in sunshine as they ran alongside the Amo to the finish.
