Annual General Meeting

Notice is hereby given that the Annual General Meeting of Lordshill Road Runners will be held at 8.00pm on Thursday 28th September 2000 at Oaklands. The room number will be advertised on the Club notice board when known.

Business to be placed on the Agenda should be notified to the Secretary, Jim Shepperd, at least 14 days prior to the meeting. Jims address is 101 Sandpiper Road, Lordswood, Southampton. Tel. 023 8034 5150

You are reminded that this is your one chance to have your say on how your Club is run, and who runs it – and you are urged to attend.

Elections for the Committee will be held at the meeting, and nominations can be made either in advance, or at the meeting. Most of the present Committee have expressed their willingness to stand again, but this should in no way deter anyone from offering nominations for any post.

The Committee currently comprises Chairman, Treasurer, Secretary, Events Secretary, Magazine Editor, 2 Coaches, Excursion Secretary and 7 other representatives.

*** It is hoped that we will be permitted to provide Cheese and Wine at this meeting as previously ***

Chairman's Chat

With the RR10 season over and the evenings drawing in it looks as though the summer is almost over; did anyone actually notice it begin? Whatever happened to those long hot summers of childhood, or even 1976? Unless you can get away to some guaranteed heat nearer the Equator it seems as though all you get are a few nice days interspersed among the rain and gloom.

To be fair, I have enjoyed several long, hot, Sunday morning runs in recent weeks, with a fair number of other Lordshill members as company. It is good to see how many of the newer members are entering into the spirit of club running just for the fun of a long run in company, although there are a number of people with autumn races to aim for who are putting in a lot of effort as well. Chez Dawes was the superb venue for a few less strenuous runs through the blistering heat of French mornings and now that Geoff and Jenny have two showers and a bath, to say nothing of three toilets, it was a real pleasure to be invited to get some serious training in ready for the Medoc Marathon in September: run a mile, drink a glass; run a mile, drink a glass; walk a mile, drink a glass; walk half a mile, drink two glasses; sit down, drink a glass; stand up, fall over, get a medal.

The turn out at this year's RR10s has been really good and for the final event at IBM Hursley we fielded practically our strongest men's A team. The publication of results in the 'Echo' was delayed and as I write this I do not know what our score in the final event or for the whole season was; in any case a large number of members appeared to have enjoyed the fortnightly battles with other local runners and we did our best to keep the social side of the league going as well. The New Forest 10 barbecue was the usual social success and we had a good turn out for the actual race as well.

The paid up membership has now reached 80 and, with new members still arriving at regular intervals, the Club is thriving. Details of the AGM are included in this issue of Lordshill News and I would urge you all to turn up and have a say in how your club is run and what it is doing. All the present Committee members could be persuaded to stand again but new blood and new ideas are always welcome and if you want to do your bit, just turn up and volunteer.

The Prostate Cancer Charity fund raising is still going on; please support the events listed elsewhere but, more to the point, try to get some people other than club members involved as well; there must be plenty of people out there who we have not yet given the opportunity to contribute so let's empty their pockets for a change!

Finally a quiz. A major prize will be given to anyone supplying me with the correct answers to these questions that arose during nocturnal star gazing from reclining seats on a certain French patio following yet another bout of carbohydrate and protein intake, with subsidiary rehydration.

  1. Is there a system of air traffic control for satellites?

  1. Do satellites reappear in the same area of sky at the same time?

  1. Why do all the best shooting stars appear as you are looking in the wrong area of sky?

  1. Is there a better way of describing the path of a satellite than "from the Persimmon tree,

  1. leftwards below the bright star in the middle, heading towards the small group of three stars over there"?

  1. Who is still awake and looking?

  1. Is there another bottle open?

  1. What time is it?

  1. Have I had my tea?

Don't forget that we now have the Hampshire Road Race League as well as the cross country leagues to look forward to. Let's get out there and show some of the other clubs that running can be fun as well as competitive.

Have a good autumn's running.

Derek

New Forest 10

This was the third race in five days for Graham Bungay (i.e. see Wellow race below), the first two being ‘a warm up’ so as he could help his team mates take 15th, 16th, and 17th places in this annual race which is always well supported by Lordshill.  First for the club - now fully recovered from his turned ankle at the Fawley RR10, was Rob Tanner, in 15th place, breaking the hour in the process.  After the briefest of gaps, Keith Langford crossed the line, only to be closely followed by Graham Bungay, snapping at his heels.

...isn’t always the same...you can wait around for ages for a Lordshill Road Runner – then three come along at once…

On the day the weather was not as bad as the mid-week forecast.  It managed to stay dry for the race but there were a few heavy showers during the rest of the afternoon as the usual Barbecue was on the go.

The first two runners home were vets, Overton Harriers’ Ian Ford taking first prize and the veteran-40 category in 56.10 mins.  Polly Roger-Dixon of Herne Hill Harriers came down from London to win the women’s race with a time of 1.02.34.  Eastleigh Running club appeared to be the club of the day taking both the men’s and women’s team prizes as well as some of the individual prizes. Our own Keith Langford received a glass goblet for his place in the men’s vet 40 cat. Again every finisher received a special horse brass which makes a change from the usual medal or T/shirt.

The New Forest 10 mile Race Results

Robert Tanner          (15th) 0.59.50              Roy Mcloughlin         (244th) 1.18.29

Keith Langford          (16th) 1.00.17              Sheila Fox                  (267th) 1.19.35

Graham Bungay        (17th) 1.00.23              Kevin Thomas           (268th) 1.19.36

Jim Shepperd             (94th) 1.08.20                  Helen Backshell       (332nd) 1.23.12

Mike Bisson             (108th) 1.09.10                 Geoff Dawes             (395th) 1.26.40

Ian Whitcher              (124th) 1.10.18               Ken Barnett               (432nd) 1.29.17

Mike Letheren          (148th) 1.12.22                 Mike Dukes               (437th) 1.29.40

Derek Goodchild      (167th) 1.13.30                  Chris Dawes              (504th) 1.35.41

Patrick Joseph          (192nd) 1.15.04                 Maria Bunce              (529th) 1.40.48

Garry Glass               (222nd) 1.17.09                Jenny Dawes             (536th) 1.43.10

After the racing was out of the way, attention was turned to the more important business of the day, namely the eating, drinking and otherwise doing what Lordshill members and their associates seem to do best. Yet again the other clubs fell by the wayside one by one, until only Lordshill remained in the late afternoon, enjoying what had been almost rain-free day, despite the threats from above.   Thanks to all involved in the catering and organisation of the day, with plenty of salads and cooking and buns and beer all round.

West Wellow Fun Run

Same course as in the past, around the lanes towards Sherfield English and back with just a few yards on grass at the finish.  Instead of the usual Thursday evening the race was held on a Saturday afternoon alongside the Wellow Carnival and village fete.  Not many runners made the trip out into the Hampshire countryside, only two from Lordshill and not many more from other Southampton Clubs.  Lordshill member Graham Bungay, who is a native of Wellow, ran well to come in second.  One of our best ever results in the race. Our other runner (me) trailed in some way behind with a time of 27 mins.

Bishop Waltham 5 mile

Just 133 competitors took part in the 5 mile Bishop Waltham road race organised by the Bishop Waltham Rotary Club as part of their carnival week. The course starts and finishes on the road outside the fire-station, and runs through part of the town centre before heading out to some quieter back roads, Just before half-distance, a lovely hill, which winds it’s way upwards for the best part of a mile, greets you. At the top, refreshments are available and very welcome. The descent is quite sharp but once you’ve reached the base the run takes you along a high banked road which is fast and takes you virtually to the finish.

Phil Guest was the winner in a time of 28-04. Lordshill was represented by Rob Tanner who came  home in 8th place with an impressive 29-34 (PB). Hot on his heels was Graham Bungay with a time of 30-14 (PB).

Braishfield 5 mile

The Braishfield 5 Mile course consists of 2 loops, the first loop being slightly longer. Both are run on undulating back roads. Despite the hills, this is a fast course with the winner, Mark Gregory, nipping round in 26-45.

All the finishers received a free pint in the pub next to the finish. With this in mind the thirstiest was Graham Bungay, in a new PB time 29-03 coming in 14th place.

Surprisingly, Ken Barnett was the only other male Lordshill runner, finishing 83rd in a time of 40-37.

In the women's Vet 40 category, Sioux Thirtle, running in her Team Solent Guise impressed by taking 1st prize with a time of 35-07.

CC5 Cross-Country League

This  Sunday morning winter cross-country league has some unique features that make it particularly popular amongst local club runners. Like the RR10 series, all races are free to enter, provided each club in the series gets involved in hosting one race. However, unlike the RR10s, provided clubs can manage to marshal the route adequately, they can also field teams too. However, perhaps the most significant point about the ‘CC5’s is that there are speed restrictions that exclude the faster runners. These restrictions, simply put exclude male runners who have run 6 minute/mile or faster over a measured road race of 5 miles or more during the previous year (from Jan 1st). For women the pace is 6 1/2 minute/mile.

There are now 8 clubs involved in the series, which means, combined with the speed restrictions, the turnout is smaller than the RR10s, but the competition is quite enough for a mid-winter Sunday morning!

The League has grown in the last couple of years with the addition of Hardley Runners and now Running Sisters. We have also decided to start the series slightly earlier – which means that there is the potential for an additional race i.e. from 5 races to 6 (CC5 – CC6) the provisional schedule given below allows for this. The ‘Lordswood’ race hosted by Southampton RC is proposed only. If it cannot happen, Eastleigh’s race will still be the last and will move to Southampton’s date.

Date                             Club                                                     Venue

HAMPSHIRE CROSS COUNTRY LEAGUE

Winter’s on its way and the dates for the above Saturday league have just been announced. Subscription is up again this year to £45-00.

Our committee has suggested that a discussion should again be held at the AGM on September 28th with reference to

Should Lordshill enter, as not many members take part? or,

If Lordshill do enter, would those taking part be prepared to pay a small fee towards the subscription cost?

Have a think and be prepared to raise your arm for or against on the 28th.

Dates and venues for the season 2000/2001 are.

Saturday  Oct 14th -  Farley Mount Winchester

Saturday November 4th – Prospect Park Reading

Saturday December 2nd -To be notified.  No club has yet applied to organise the event.

Saturday January 13th - Rotten Hill Overton.  This is a lovely course, not at all rotten!

Saturday February 3rd – Kings Park Bournemouth.

Hampshire Road Race League

The Hampshire Road Race League is soon to start, with the first event, the New Forest Half Marathon on the 10th September. The closing date for this event has passed, and for the first year, they are NOT accepting entries on the day, so if you haven’t entered by now…..!

However the second event is the Basingstoke Klix Six (10k), October 15th. A form is included with this issue of Lordshill News.

The third event is our own Lordshill 10 miler, and of course we have to marshal this event. However, we hope that we can afford to release a few marshals and put in a team in our own race.

The fourth race is the Hayling Ten, and this is not only a HRRL event but ALSO our CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS! Again a form is included in this issue. Be sure to enter  this one!

The fifth event is the Stubbington 10k on January 7th 2001, a popular race with Lordshill members anyway. Forms for this race will be supplied when available.

Milland Valley 10K and 20K trail race

Organised by Liss runners this inaugural running of the event was originally restricted to a hundred starters, but the entries just kept rolling in so that well over 300 runners started the two races on the day.  Mainly off road, as the title suggests, the route covered grass, mud, rocks, stones, bricks, sand and 76 stone steps.  The 20km course wound its way up hill and down dale in an area, which is very pretty, east of the A3, south of Liss.  The tops of the climbs offered wonderful views across the surrounding countryside while the valleys offered quite a lot of muddy sections even in the middle of summer.  A race that is hoped to be an annual event and one that could become a must for off-road runners as the Beast, Stickler and the Grizzly.

Salisbury 5-4-3-2-1 Walk/Run

40/30/20/10K routes

Another very good event organised by the very active Salisbury Fire Brigade.  Four routes, all very well sign posted, non of which are races.  For the longer courses walkers start from 8-00 am onwards and runners after 9-30. No winners so no prizes. The day offers one of the best prizes of all, the wonderful scenery of Wiltshire and a chance to enjoy it at a leisurely pace whether running  or walking and the chance to pass through large estates that are not normally open to the public.  The figures 5-4-3-2-1 in the title refer to, on the 40K route, five rivers crossed, four hills climbed, three country estates which you cross on private land, two castles which you skirt round and the spire of Salisbury Cathedral which is never far from sight throughout the day.  If you are looking for a long training run, or short, in different surroundings, give this event a try.  A very good map is supplied at the start along with a route description and a list of places visited on the way. A good day out for the family.

RR10 Series - Races 6 to 10

Race No 6 –  June 21st Manor Farm Country Park.

No Paul Phillips this week so the improving Rob Tanner, in 12th place,  was the first Lordshill runner home. This was Rob’s best position so far this year. Although a windy evening the atmosphere under the trees was humid on the testing two lap course which finishes at the top of a rather sharp hill. Winner on the night was last year’s men’s champion, Russell Savage, running his first RR 10 of the summer. Jan Ross won the women’s event with Lordshill’s Dilys Gartside in 7th place.  Not such a good turn out for Lordshill as the Caen runners were still somewhere out in the English Channel.

Race No 7 –  July 5th  Fawley Inclosure

A new course this year from Hardley Road Runners, a course with a sting in the tail.  One fairly flat big loop taking you back to within sight of the finish followed by a smaller loop which had some nice little hills to contend with just before you hit the finishing straight.  All of this in a small area of land called the Fawley Inclosure which lies alongside the A326 just before the Hardley roundabout.  Lordshill did not fair so well at this event as again no Paul Phillips, and Rob Tanner pulled up after turning an ankle.  Rob did not want to continue aggravating his ankle as he had set his sights on running a good time at The New Forest Ten a few days later. (See separate report that shows that he did the right thing on the night).  Graham Bungay was the first Lordshill runner home in 20th place with Keith Langford, another runner saving himself for the 10 miler, some way behind in 33rd place.  Two positions that were to change the following Sunday at New Park Farm.  New member, Tom Anderson on his first outing for the club ran in, in 48th position. Dilys Gartside dropped a few places on her previous RR10 to finish in 11th place , with Sheila Fox (24th) and Helen Backshell (28th) completing  our women’s team. Most runners felt that the new course was a good one and made a nice change although it was a little damp in places because of the heavy rain the previous day.

Race No 8 –  July 19th  Crawley Court, Nr Winchester

A rejuvenated course for this RR 10. Many veteran runners remember this triangular route north of Winchester from when it was last used in the eighties and early nineties. To newer runners of the series it was as fresh an experience as Fawley Inclosure was to us all two weeks previously. The race comprised two laps, with a long uphill drag at the start of each lap. The other two sides of the triangle are either flat or gently downhill through the lovely Hampshire countryside.

Paul Phillips was back with us, finishing in fifth place followed by Rob Tanner 12th and Keith Langford 21st.  Graham Bungay had an off night running in  38th place. With Dilys Gartside a non runner, Sheila Fox was the first of our five women runners home in 30th place, closely followed by Helen Backshell in 32nd position.

Race No 9 –  August 2nd Deer Leap Inclosure, HAPPY CHEESE, Ashurst. OUR OWN RACE.

After last year’s torrential downpours and nightmare car-parking scenarios, this year’s race seemed to run like a relative dream. Somehow we managed to shoe-horn all the ‘motors’ in and early threats of rain turned out to be a couple of showers - all done and dusted by the start of the race. Plenty of Lordshill  members turned out to do their duty with marshalling, drinks and other crucial jobs to ensure evening was a success.

Plenty of runners turned up too, which is unusual for this time of year with holidays normally trimming our race to one of the smallest of the series. As it was it appears to have been one of the best attended so far!!

Thanks to all who turned up to help... proving yet again that Lordshill RR will always put on a good race.

Race No 10 –  August 16th  IBM Hursley

The last of this year evening runs again produced a large turn out of Lordshill runners. As in previous years this was a three lap course starting and finishing on the cricket pitch which is very handy for the club house!

Paul Phillips, who is training for an autumn Marathon in Italy led our contingent home finishing 5th, not too far behind the winner, Team Solent’s Angus Maclean. Angus has won every RR10 he has attended, usually by a very clear margin. Expect to see his name appearing on the international scene.

Lordshill were probably finally fielding their strongest men’s team on the night – something which resulted in a move from 8th to 7th men’s team overall in the series.

Our women’s team also put in a good appearance on the night, although remained joint 10th, along with Eastleigh.

Training Update

After the disruption of the last few weeks presented by the Millennium Youth Games, we should now be able to return to our Sports Centre venue for a month or so while we still have the light. However, the loss of the Sports Centre has meant that we have explored the delights of Lordswood a bit more – something that seems to have been appreciated, and certainly a resource of off-road running of which we should make more use!

Thanks to Graham Bungay (and others on occasions) for stepping into the breach to keep us ‘working-out’ when our regular coaches have been unavailable on some Tuesdays.

The date for the move to Nursling/Hills will be set at the AGM.

The Route Recce from Hell!

One of the key features of all successful Test Way Relay teams is the way in which each member of the team navigates his or her way, from start to finish with no hint of getting lost. This skill is always enhanced by all members having recce’d their portion of the 45 miles in advance of race day.

So it was that on the Thursday before the event, the runners of first four ‘legs’ (in order; Derek Goodchild, Jim Shepperd, Paul Burnage and Roger Bradley) set off, after work, in the direction of Inkpen Beacon. We had devised a cunning plan involving two cars – dropping Roger off first at the end of his leg, to run it backwards, then on to leave Derek’s car at the end of leg 1 before taking him to the start and sending him on his way.

By now the light was already going – worsened by the heavy skies and intermittent heavy rain. I was the second to start as Paul dropped me off on the way back down to the start of his leg. Halfway through the 5 or so miles I knew we had a problem – in the gathering gloom I was having trouble seeing my map and the small ‘TW’  markers on the posts, and when I entered some woods at the top of a steep hill the lights went out completely. It was more by luck than judgement that I managed to stick to the route and finally find Derek waiting for me with his car at the end of my 5.5 mile leg.

Next it was on to the end of Paul’s leg. The rain was becoming more persistent now and it was almost completely dark. We got to the Pub, the agreed rendezvous point, to find Roger into his second pint, but no sign of Paul. We waited….half an hour after expected time and still no sign…..

Derek and I set off first on foot, then in the car, up all available lanes, returning to the Plough Inn …..to check on Rogers progress! It was now no longer a joke. Paul could have fallen in the pitch darkness, broken an ankle, knocked himself out!! Was it time to call out the police and their spotter-plane?

One last sortie, after over an hour of mounting panic saw us once more driving up a country lane in the pouring rain. Then, in the car lights in the distance we saw a drowned rat in T-shirt and shorts jogging towards us, only slightly off his route. The relief in the car was audible two miles away. As Paul climbed into the back of the car it was clear that he was a lot less stressed than the rest of us, and was in remarkably good spirits, considering his ordeal. Apparently one guy, seeing him out with his map, had asked  Paul if he was into ‘night-navigation’? Well, yes, but not intentionally!

Next time we do our recce’s on a Sunday morning Guys.

Report on the race next issue - the results are now available on the RR10 web-site

Portland 10 mile

Not the flattest of courses with a long climb up the Isle to the finish this race, now in it’s 19th year, still attracts runners from far and wide. The organises also mange to attract a long list of sponsors which results in an extensive prize list. On a changeable July morning Portland Bill can be hot and humid on one part of the course and damp and cold on another...as it was for this years race. The up and down course was very well Policed and marshalled. Every junction and roundabout was covered and this made for a very safe race.

The men’s race was won by Leigh Beard and remarkably the women’s race was won by an over 50 runner, Rosemarie Osborn of New Forest Road Runners. Two Lordshill runners made the journey to Dorset this year, one of whom, Brian Grierson took the Vet 60 prize finishing in 68th place in 73.18.  Meanwhile, as a vet 57,  I finished a little behind Brian in 107th place with a time of 80.35. I later found that the vet 55 to 59 prize was won with a time of 66 mins by a ‘youngster’ of just 55. Sadly entry numbers were down this year with just 179 finishers.

Maralap 2000

This year’s Wessex Cancer Trust Maralap which is again being sponsored by Bacardi-Martini has a new date September 3rd. A later date has been set as the Southampton Sports Centre’s new running track was not finished in time for the usual summer Sunday.  So if your not running ‘The Beast’ how about organising a team of eleven to run laps of the Sports Centre.

Club Championships

In the light of the Club joining the Hampshire Road Race League (HRRL)

your Committee has revised the venue for the Club Championships this year.

The Hayling 10 is a HRRL event, two weeks after our own Lordshill 10.   The Bournemouth 10, our traditional Club Championship race, falls on the weekend between them.

So, to avoid asking members to turn out for three consecutive Sundays, we will now be running at Hayling this year...and might expect our best turnout for a HRRL event for the entire season!!

The Haying 10 is a flat fast race and has been used for our Club Championships in the past. There is in any case a body of support within the club for a return to Hayling.

Totton Carnival 5K

With at least half of the race running down the Salisbury Road which was traffic free in preparation for the following Totton Carnival, this 4th running of the event had it’s usual problem for some of the faster runners in that the railway gates were closed and they had to run over the footbridge.  Lots of people on the route gave great support to the runners while they waited for the carnival floats which like the runners travelled to Eling recreation ground.  Apart from the footbridge this is a very fast 5k course.   Murray Hodges was first home in 15.29 but not far behind, in third place, was are own Rob Tanner 16.26 with Keith Langford in 6th place 17.01.  Other results as follows:

19th      Dick Baines      18.24

58th      Dave Clothier   21.52

59th      Roger Bradley  21.52

61st      Kevin Thomas  22.01

64th      Steve Page       22.42.

Eastleigh Airport Team Charity 5K

What is hoped to be an annual event took place at the unusual location of Eastleigh Airport, using the aprons and main runway to provide the running surface.  Around 350 runners took part in teams of various numbers  - all heavily sponsored.  A Circuit had been marked out using the full length of the runway with fire engines at each end as markers.  Up to £12.000 was raised on the night for various local and national charities.

Dorset Doddle  30.5 miles.

What started out as a long distance walk, has in later years been opened to insane runners.  A ‘doddle’ it is not!  Starting by the Weymouth clock tower on the sea front the route follows the Dorset Coastal Path eastwards, finishing at the Youth Centre in Swanage. On the way there are one or two (or may be more as you tend to lose count) hills to climb. These ascents and of course some descents, some of which are worse than going up, help participants to take in the delights of Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove, Worbarrow Bay, Kimmerage Bay and many many more.

Both runners and walkers are given a card at the start which is marked with the time of your arrival at the numerous check points which have ample water - much needed on this year’s hot and sunny day. Supplying these waterholes can be no easy task as many are a long way from the nearest tap and at least one was nowhere near any sort of vehicle access.

A very well organised event with very friendly people helping out all along the route, considering how far from civilisation many of them were. Does time taken matter? I took almost twice as long as the course record….but I had a great day and managed to run the last mile and a half – and also run the next day! So it couldn’t have hurt that much.

Charity News

After the success of the first half of the year, which included the London Marathon sponsorship, progress in fund-raising has not surprisingly slowed a little. However, there are more things planned in the months ahead.

1) Your Chairman is looking for sponsorship as he runs the MEDOC MARATHON on the 16th September. Since Derek is not planning on breaking any time records, perhaps sponsorship will be on the basis of the number of glasses of Bordeaux he downs during the 26 miles???

2) We are going to have a have a Car-Boot sale, probably on the 24th September. Sue Jewsbury has heroically volunteered to co-ordinate proceedings. If you have any suitable items you are prepared to donate to the cause, please let Sue know as soon as possible.

3) We still have some plans for a social evening later in the autumn, possibly involving a quiz and certainly involving as many of the other local club runners as possible – to raise money from outside our own boundaries.

4) DON’T FORGET the Treasure hunt, organised by Mike Newman. Apart from generating a bit of cash it should be a fun day out, and one where you can bring the family too….

See you there.
